少儿英语短篇故事(1)



A person feared his own shadow and loathed(讨厌) his own footprints, and wanted to leave behind his shadow and footprints very much.

So he ran faster and faster, and left more and more footprints. And his shadow chased him faster and faster. But he thought it was because he did not run fast enough. Then he ran forward even faster. In the end he died of exhaustion on the road. He did not know that if he hid in shady palaces, there would be no shadow. If he stopped there would be no more footprints. How stupid the person was!

有一个人害怕自己的影子,讨厌自己的脚印,一心想甩开自己的影子和脚印跑掉。

结果,他走得越快,留下的脚印就越多;跑得越急,影子也追得越紧。他自己却认为甩不开影子和脚印是跑得太慢,于是更加拼命往前跑,最后终于因用尽力气而累死在路上。他不知道阴暗的地方就不会有影子,停住不动就不会有影子,这个人实在太愚蠢了。

A farmer in the state of Song once got a piece of stone with jade(翡翠,碧玉) in it.

He presented this stone to Prime Minister Zi Han. But Zi Han refused to accept it. The farmer explained, "It looks like just a stone, but there is jade inside. It actually is a piece of treasure and suitable for honorable men like you, not for us common people."

"I know there is jade inside," Zi Han said," but I disagree with you. I think to have the virtue of declining things that do not belong to oneself is the real treasure. "

宋国人有个农夫得到一块含宝玉的石头后,将它献给了相国子罕。

子罕拒绝接受这块石头,农夫解释说:“表面上它是块石头,但里面含有宝玉,是个宝物,适合您这样的贵人使用,我们普通百姓用它就不合适了。”

子罕说:“我知道里面是宝玉。但我的观点和你不同,我认为具有不接受不应得的东西的品德才是真正的宝玉。”

In 354 BC, the state of Wei attacked Zhao and laid siege to(包围) its capital Handan.

Zhao turned to Qi for help, but the Qi general Sun Bin determined it would be unwise to meet the army of Wei head on, so he instead attacked their capital at Daliang.

When the Wei general Pang Juan heard that the capital was being attacked, he rushed his army back to defend the capital. The army of Wei retreated in haste, and the tired troops were ambushed and defeated at the Battle of Guiling.

Zhao was thus rescued while Pang Juan barely escaped back to Wei to recoup(收回,恢复) his losses.

The Two Soldiers And The Robber

Two Soldiers travelling together were set upon by a Robber. One of them ran away, but the other stood his ground, and laid about him so lustily with his sword that the Robber was fain to fly and leave him in peace. When the coast was clear the timid one ran back, and, flourishing his weapon, cried in a threatening voice, “Where is he? Let me get at him, and I’ll soon let him know whom he’s got to deal with.” But the other replied, “You are a little late, xiaogushi8.com my friend: I only wish you had backed me up just now, even if you had done no more than speak, for I should have been encouraged, believing your words to be true. As it is, calm yourself, and put up your sword: there is no further use for it. You may delude others into thinking you’re as brave as a lion: but I know that, at the first sign of danger, you run away like a hare.”

两个士兵和强盗

两个士兵一起赶路,途中被一个强盗所劫。其中一个士兵马上逃跑了,另一个则勇敢地握着剑立在原地,强盗不得不其他而逃。这时候,那个胆小的士兵跑过来,抽出剑,壮着胆子大喝一声:“他去哪里了?让我来对付他,我要让他知道面对的是什么人。”然而,那名勇敢的士兵说:“你来晚了,我的朋友。要是你刚才能帮我就好了,即便只是嘴上这样说也好,因为我会受到你这番话的鼓舞,并且相信这些话都说真的。而现在,还是请你把剑收好,已经没有必要再用它了。你只能欺骗其他人,让人们以为你像雄狮一样勇敢;而我却知道,在遇到危险时,你会像兔子一样落荒而逃。”

A shepherd-boy, who watched a flock of sheep near a village, brought out the villagers three or four times by crying out, "Wolf! Wolf!" and when his neighbors came to help him, laughed at them for their pains.

一个牧童,在一个村子的边上放羊,他三番四次地喊“狼来了”,村民听到后都跑出来帮他,但其实狼并没有来,牧童只是拿他们来开玩笑。

The Wolf, however, did truly come at last. The Shepherd-boy, now really alarmed, shouted in an agony of terror: "Pray, do come and help me; the Wolf is killing the sheep"; but no one paid any heed to his cries, nor rendered any assistance. The Wolf, having no cause of fear, at his leisure lacerated or destroyed the whole flock.

不过,狼,最后真的来了。这时,牧童真的着急了,他非常害怕地叫喊:“求求你们了,过来帮帮我吧,狼正在吃羊了”,但没有人理他,更没有人来帮他。结果,那只狼肆无忌惮对羊群大开杀戒,羊群一下子就全毁了。

There is no believing a liar, even when he speaks the truth.

这故事告诉我们:撒谎的人是没人相信的,即使当他说实话的时候
